OUR CITY, STATE, AND BEYOND.
Who We Are
Providence Baptist Church (earlier known as Colored Baptist Church) was established in 1885, at the corner of Cherry and West Mountain Street in Kernersville NC. Providence worshiped at this site until December 28, 1888, when the congregation relocated on a one – half acre lot on Broad Street in Kernersville. In 1907, property was purchased at 319 Nelson Street where the new church was erected in 1930. In 1969, Providence Baptist Church’s name became official. The present edifice below was constructed and completed in 1978. Providence Baptist Church has been blessed with excellent leadership and stewardship for 138 years under B.A. Brown, J. H. Linville, John Hepler, Reverend J. N. Stallings, Rev. Derioux Johnson (1977-2009), and currently Reverend Doctor Keith Vereen. We have not only ministered to our members, but over these many years we have also been involved in outreach programs and disaster relief to our community, within North Carolina and beyond. Our new transition begins as Providence will be moving with fond memories.
The Spiritual Gift of Giving
As a congregation, we are entering a time of discerning what we will contribute monetarily during our 3-year Capital Campaign. The practice of exercising financial stewardship is a spiritual discipline (Romans 12) and a way to grow our faith. The ministry and mission of our church take place because of the spiritual and financial gifts our members and friends choose to offer. There is joy to be found in practicing generosity and it begins with a simple step of a commitment to contribute. Your gift matters – it matters to you as a giver, and to the church which utilizes it as a resource for missions. We pray that you will challenge yourself to give in a regular and disciplined way above your regular tithes and offerings. The chart below hopefully will aid in helping you find a comfortable starting place for yourself.
The Future
Below is a rendition of our future sanctuary. Your contribution to our Capital Campaign will assist us in propelling our vision forward of ministering to the local community, city, and state with the hope of seeing souls drawn to the kingdom of God.
Why We Are Moving
Providence Baptist Church is located on property within the Civitan Fitness Park (formerly Civitan Park) on Nelson Street. The Park’s redesign was completed in May 2023 with the addition of several areas for fitness related activities. Subsequent to the completion of the park redesign, Providence Baptist Church sold its current building to the town of Kernersville and is now leasing the church building. We have initiated a Capital Campaign to raise $3.2 million to construct a new sanctuary on property located at 2064 West Mountain Street in Kernersville, NC. Through your giving, you are sharing with others and reaching them with the Good News of Jesus Christ. We solicit your prayers as we embark on our transition to a new location knowing that Providence will no longer be limited in the ministry of Jesus Christ that extends beyond the doors of the church.
